The Wisdom of Being truthful . . .

It is good to be truthful but is it easy to do so? In most cases, yes it is – for if you state the truth when asked, you don't have to try and remember if there was some type of story you were trying to pass off.

But does this then mean there is some acceptable white lie situations? In reality, yes . . . but what those are and is it really the right thing to do? That is the critical big question.

So, it is in thinking about those edges of the truth, that we do need to look at some examples. First up, are the Dads like me, those who would say things to their kids that were at least humorous at the most and touching on truthfulness at the least. This image of Calvin with his Dad is one example of that 'teasing' . . . but as my wife would always get after me by saying . . . “You've got to tell the kids you're kidding.”

Second. Is the situation where you can be honest and tell the truth but you are going to embarrass someone. That then is where the 'white lie' or the bending of the truth may be the better way to go. It comes down to the honorable action. But that there is the danger as well. What is honorable? That then is the focus that we all should pursue. If we can't be honest, can we ever be trusted? To me, being trusted, being respected and being appreciated is all that we should aspire to. The challenge – will we?

Third and in closing is to know this may seem simple but believe me, there will be tough situations that will really challenge you. Keep coming back to 'what is the honorable thing to do?' and that will be what you are glad that you decided upon.
